Himavad GopalSwamyBetta & Blue Lagoon

May 1 2010

For a change we had planned this trip 2 days in advance and Sachin along with my wife’s parents joined us. I decided to leave a bit early to avoid any traffic and by 4:11 we were on the road. With rains overnight and an empty mysore road, i was speeding @ 100 constantly and by 6 we were in mysore. Mr Mysore (sachin) guided us through the city and we were quickly on the ooty road. We stopped on the road side for a quick refreshment and the menu was Idli and chutney. The chutney was yumm and after munching on a few idli’s we started again and our next stop was GopalSwamyBetta. Reaching the base of the mountain we had to pay an entry fee of 50. The roads are not maintained properly and a single lane all the way to the top. The climb is very steep and there are around 3 blind corners where you need to be on 1st gear.  On route to temple there are many places where you could park your car and enjoy the picturesque views of cloud bead just below the green mountains.  The view is simply mesmerizing. You are allowed to wander around the mountains and if you are lucky enough you will spot elephants. After few cliques and exploring the place for a while we headed towards the temple. The temple is dedicated to Gopalaswamy, which is one of the names of the Hindu God Krishna. A quick visit to the temple and we headed for a small trek through the mountains. It was nice refreshing walk in the mountains with just elephant grass around and few trees. After that it was time to head back to mysore for lunch with sun right on top of us and heavy traffic. The worst part was everyone in the back seat of the car had dozed off. It was the only time i felt if some one could drive and i take a small nap.. Reaching mysore we stopped at Sidharatha for lunch, though the lunch was good, it was too expensive. After the heavy lunch next stop was Blue lagoon- the KRS backwaters. The road leading to lagoon was bad and you will have to go thru a thota (field).  The view is  nice but the water is not so clear as its seen. There’s silt deposit near the shore and the water is a bit muddy but if you go ahead, you will get clear water. We played in the water till the sun came down and @ 5 we decided to head back home. With a stop in Mandya to get refreshed we did not stop any where and i was in bed totally exhausted by 8:30. All in all a great drive, scenic places, blue water, heavy traffic – too much for a day. Best trip of the year so far for me..
